PROGRAM
At Timber Ridge Prep, your daughter and her family
are top priorities.
Parents who enroll their
daughters at Timber Ridge Prep enter a program that’s unique to the
industry. We’ve found that students achieve greater success when the
adults in their lives participate in the learning process. Because we
believe family involvement is a crucial part of healing and education,
we encourage families to experience Timber Ridge Prep in tandem with
their daughters.
Sometimes the most
difficult challenges can bring the greatest joy. At Timber Ridge Prep,
joy begins to unfold as parent and child learn to communicate with one
another.
THERAPY
At Timber Ridge Prep we
focus therapy on the whole child and the challenges of adolescence. We
combine different aspects of therapy for each girl, creating a unique
program to help her attain a healthy, balanced life. As an adjunct
to our therapeutic milieu, we have incorporated Dialectical Behavioral
Therapy or DBT.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavioral
Therapy (DBT) is state-of-the-art cognitive behavioral therapy developed
by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. at the University of Washington. DBT is an
empirically based treatment model that emphasizes a nonjudgmental,
validation approach to treating students and their families. It has
proven to have additional mental health benefits for the adolescent
population, especially those who are characterized by a high degree of
emotional instability. For example, it is useful in treating disorders
such as complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), mood and anxiety
disorders as well as substance abuse disorders. Often, adolescents who
meet the above descriptions, present with complex clinical profiles that
can be complicated further by significant peer and family conflicts.
Timber Ridge has
developed a distinct program which incorporates DBT principles and
practices into the daily routine. We utilize formal skill building
groups facilitated by nationally trained clinicians in concert with
milieu programming, individual therapy and focused assignments such as
ongoing self analysis of behavior and "mindfulness" exercises. Students
monitor their behaviors and emotions on a daily basis with specially
designed diary cards which reflect improvements in quality of life,
attaining educational goals and deepening healthy relationships. In our
residential setting, we have many opportunities to coach the students in
using their newly acquired skills in a multitude of life situations.
Problematic behavior (self-harm,
impulsiveness, etc) is both an unsuccessful attempt to reduce emotional
distress, as well as a consequence of impulsive decision-making that
takes place when the person is emotionally dysregulated. A primary
objective of DBT is to teach the student concrete behavioral skills.
The goals of treatment
are:
- To decrease life-threatening and
quality of life interfering behaviors
- Enhance behavioral capabilities
and social functioning
- Reduce emotional reactivity
(especially anger)
- Improve motivation to change
- Generalize new skills to the
real-world environment
Because DBT focuses on
treating behavior, not diagnosis, students leave Timber Ridge with a
portable skills-set to address emotional dysregulation, interpersonal
effectiveness, distress tolerance and mindfulness.
Other Components of Timber
Ridge Prep therapy

focus. Students complete all four levels to successfully graduate
from Timber Ridge Prep.
- We provide Master's level therapists, carefully selected
to fit Timber Ridge Prep’s philosophy and goals.
- We offer individual therapy to help students learn to
trust themselves, explore individual issues, and increase
self-expression.
- Our group therapy and recreation
programs encourage students to bond with their classmates, trust
others, and develop social skills.
- We provide drug and alcohol education
on-site, including both individual and group therapy.
- We support our students during home visits and
after graduation.
- Each student leaves the program with a
comprehensive, clear, and concise
after-care plan.
ACADEMICS
Your daughter needn’t
sacrifice her education because of emotional obstacles.
Timber Ridge Prep’s
academics program is process-oriented rather than goal-oriented. Our
teachers help each young woman reach her full potential. Students learn
to cooperate and achieve success at their own rate instead of competing
with others. We ask each student to perform to the best of her ability.
There can be no failure in trying – only in not doing.
Timber Ridge Prep offers
- full accreditation
by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS).
- fully certificated
teachers.
- a college
preparatory curriculum.
- a dual-pronged
approach to education, where intellectual growth goes hand-in-hand
with emotional growth.
- a state-of-the-art
classroom on campus, including digital satellite and wireless
technology.
- An academic plan for
each young woman, allowing her to proceed at her own pace, grow
intellectually, and move ahead in particular subjects.
- opportunities for
students to challenge themselves without fear of failure.
- individualized
attention with a small teacher/student ratio. This allows us to help
students who have ADD and ADHD.
At Timber Ridge Prep, we
set high academic standards while focusing on each young woman’s talents
and her ability to achieve those standards. Our students never lose
sight of their academic dreams.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH
All students are required
to participate in Timber Ridge Prep's physical curriculum. We offer
planned workouts and activities six days per week. Outdoor recreation
and structured exercise help our students grow in body, mind, and
spirit. Physical initiatives give our staff the chance to confront and
process behavior patterns, such as a student who becomes angry when
pushed or gives up in response to a challenge. We believe a young woman
who’s attuned to her body will be inclined to pursue a healthier
emotional lifestyle.
Physical Training is an
important facet of a student's daily life for a number of reasons:
- To teach and improve
on physical condition.
- Students experience
increased confidence and success in direct connection with a
student's level of participation and willingness to push herself.
- Give staff the
chance to confront and process behavior patterns, such as student
quitting when pushed, or in response to a challenge.
- Physical training
serves to manage and create a health release of energy.

- Tae Bo
